Scottish Enlightenment

From deep below, a light above. The hatch, this casket.

I will return (the favor).

  1. Mr. Bentham, I’m just curious: Are you familiar with the axiom “as above, so below”?

  2. Yes, I am familiar with hermeticism but that is not my particular area of philosophical study.

With regard to ‘as above, so below’ in particular, there are certain elements which are quite applicable to the island. But as you have witnessed, some do not believe in the physical possibilities of that concept.

  3. Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

As a side note, sometimes I find variants of that axiom help me see connections between disparate things that I didn’t notice before. Like, say, Charles Widmore and Benjamin Linus and “as it is on the island, so it is off the island.” Or perhaps Jacob and…wait, never mind, I’m not ready to continue that train of thought yet. Sorry.

  4. “An optimistic belief in the ability of man to effect changes for the better in society and nature, guided only by reason.”
