“between magic and medicine” is from the song “Time Travel” by The Coral, which is notable in that it was also hidden track on their first album.
As Eugene already noted, “I study the board … with her knight” is a line from Audrey Niffenegger’s best seller “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” which is currently being filmed as a major motion picture with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.
I think we can deduce the theme of these two clues is time travel?

This reminds me a lot of Desmond. I have not read the book, but it seems that the predicament the time traveler finds himself in is a lot like the predicament that our constant-less Desmond is in. Also present in the book is the theme that you cannot change the past, which is something that Faraday has told Desmond.
